Editing Music Video Blog

Monday when I walked into class there was something due that night. We also had to edit our music video. That night we had a blog due. So while Carla edited I stayed and wrote my blog. I wrote about my personal journey about filming. I talked about my filming location. How I got to the location and back. I also talked about our filming malfunctions. After Carla was done with importing some of the videos she began editing. During that time I was still writing my blog.

Basically all she had to do was put all of the footage together and fix the transition. The transition was that we jumped from the park onto the beach. When she was done with the transition she came over and showed me. The transition came out so smooth. But she was having trouble with uploading the footage from her phone. She had some footage on her phone from the park since the camera died. After she showed me what she had edited so far I continued on with my blog. Lots of time had passed and I was still not finished with my blog. Then the bell rang to go to 3rd period. So on my way to class I finished my blog.

But there was only one little problem. I completely forgot to publish it. I didn't notice it until late that night. I went to go shower and then remembered that i needed to publish the blog. So I did right before it was due, that was really a close one. The next class was on Wednesday. I walked in and there was all of the due dates on the board. It showed that there was another blog due on Thursday, seeing that I had time to do this I brushed it off a little. Shortly after that Carla came over with the computer to show us a clip from the video. At first I was confused but then I saw what she was looking at and it was me trying to do the walk on the beach clip and I looked like an old lady, it was so funny.

Filming blog

My personal filming journey for this whole project has been great. We completed filming on Tuesday after school. Everything  was simple. We had to do a few takes on each scene. But it came out good in the end. It was a little bit stressful. We had already filmed half of the music video at Hagen park. For the other half we had to film at the beach. It was a bit difficult because of where I live and the fact that my right didn’t initially know where we were going. But i found a way to get there somewhat on time.

I didn’t go to school that day. So I left my house prepared that day. But before heading to the beach I had to pick up Safia from school first. I did that and then we were on our way to the beach. We arrived at the beach and shortly after Carla came. They change into the clothes they were going to wear in the video while Steven and I waited.  After that we began to walk under the pier. We then started filming. We started with the transition from the park to the beach. We nailed it after the first few times.

Then we had to decide on and outro dance. We went over several things. First we thought about dancing at the shore. There was another idea but i don’t remember. After brainstorming we came up with and outro. It was the perfect one. Since Safia was the last one to leave the frame she had to do it for longer but she kept messing up. We had to take that a few times. After a while we were done and it was time to pack up and go home. My dad was a little late to pick Safia and I up from the beach so we decided to go get some ice cream to pass some time.

Music Video Journey

My personal journey for this whole project has been great so far. Even though it’s only halfway completed, I feel that a lot has been done. Everything has been fairly simple. Like helping choose the song. I originally wanted to do a different song but all of the songs I listen to aren’t that appropriate so, we agreed on “Walking On Sunshine”. I agreed because, there was a happy feel to it. After that the location for filming was chosen, which was Hagen Park. I agreed to film at Hagen because it’s closer to the school. It’s proximity made it easier to fit filming in my after school schedule. All that was left was to start shooting the music video.

We arrived at the park I had to quickly change into the clothes I was going to wear in the video. But filming was delayed due to a malfunction in Safia’s wardrobe. With the limited time we had we still managed. When we first started, I had to sit on the bench and wait for Carla to come show us the song. After that, I had to grab Safia’s hand so the choreography could start. Originally, I was messing up on the dance because I was going too slow and looking at Carla for assurance. I eventually picked up my pace and we were able to get a few good shots. The choice on shooting dates were really though. It was sunny and late in the afternoon so, the camera captured everyone very nicely. This project wasn’t that hard, filming was actually very fun.

As we finished up filming, time was the main problem. The park is right by the school so I had walk back to school. The after school activity bus was my only way of transportation home that day. I  left the park at about 4:40 and the bus usually leaves at 5 o’clock. But I managed to make it on my bus in time. I wasn’t there today in class, but I was told that they were importing all the footage that was on the camera and on Carlas phone. There was footage on her phone because, in the middle of filming the camera died. I wasn’t there to see it but I’m sure we got some great footage after seeing most of it that day of filming. Tomorrow at the pier of Fort Lauderdale beach, will be our last day of filming. I’m positive that we’re are going to get a lot of stuff done.

Story Board for Music Video

1. For the opening scene of the music video, it will be a closeup/extreme closeup of the sun and sky.

2. Then, it will be a tracking shot of Carla walking down the park with headphones on and her cellphone as apart of my props and costume. Along with this will be my actual clothing of a long yellow/floral dress. The sound will be low at first as Carla is listening to it on her phone then high when she remove the headphones.

3. The following scene will be a pan shot of Carl meeting safia and I to tell us of this song she just found.

4. A close up of the phone will be inserted and the song will begin to get louder.

5. For the next scene, the two friends and I will begin dancing in bright lighting, switching from medium shots to long shots to view the singing/dancing down the park.

6. Next, the scene following that will be the "knocking" scene. A split screen in editing  will show the male actor knocking on the door with flowers in hand as a prop, and the reaction shot on the other side waiting for his arrival.

7.  The next shot will be the "mailbox" scene. My friends and I will be waiting at the mailbox, getting ready with anticipation to open the mail.

8. A close up will show the letter and its contents as another prop.

9. The next shot is another reaction shot, which may turn into an action match to transition to the beach scene that follows.

10. On the next shot for the beach scene, it will be a track shot with a long to medium angle of me and the friends who then will continue dancing on the sand to the chorus of the song.

11. The final scene will look over the pier back into the sunset, zooming into the sun.

Planning Music Video

Location- The music video "Walking on Sunshine" will be filmed in a couple locations. The first place that the filming will be done at is Hagens Park in Fort Lauderdale. At this park, the opening scene will be presented of walking/dancing and singing along with the song. Then, the filming will be done at Fort Lauderdale Beach. The video will switch from the park to the beach during the song.

Health & Safety- The filming will be done in public and secured places. When the group takes an Uber, we will make sure to stay safe with the driver while on the road. During filming, the area will be checked for any hazardous object or people that could be around. When we're walking around to different locations, we'll make sure the area is safe and that the roads are clear of cars when crossing.

Props- The props include a cellphone which will be in the music video and headphones. These props will act as the source of where the music is coming from. Then, we'll have flowers in one scene for a part of the song. Then, a letter prop will be made for the mailbox scene.

Costumes- The costumes for the music video will be casual and floral. This will include accessories like bracelets, dress-up outfits like dresses, jumpsuits and blouses. The male actor will wear a button up shirt to be casual but clean looking. By doing so, the costume will represent an outdoor theme for the music video.

Schedule:

Monday-11/18/19
On this day, there was no Media studies class. Planning will begin the following day.

Tuesday-11/19/19
First, the class got together to discuss the blogging process for the day. My group and I did more research for our music video as well. We discussed the first couple scenes that will be shot and the location. We also implemented a few dances to go along with the music video. We discussed dates of filming. Even more so, we discussed the props and who would bring them in on the day of filming. Most importantly, I made a phone call with Hagen Park to confirm the location was appropriate to film at. Lastly, I began the storyboard for each part of the song that will be recorded.

Finish up the storyboard and practice the choreography with the group. Secure the filming locations and make sure the weather permits for filming.  Get props ready: letter and flowers. Make sure costumes are ready.

Music video blog

We just finished editing and turning in our commercials. It was very fun experience getting to film. Now we have to move on to another project, making a music video. The difference between the projects is the duration. The music video can go up to a minute while, the commercial was just 30 seconds. All we had left was to find a song to use. We ended up finding a song that worked really well with our chosen setting.

The song we're doing is called Walking on Sunshine by Katrina and the Waves. This song is in the Pop-rock genre and was recorded in 1983. We chose this song because since my group members and I live in Florida, it seems fitting with the weather. We liked the up-beat tempo and the cool-sounding nature of the song. At first, we debated on doing a Taylor Swift song and we also debated on doing a rock-n-roll song by Joan Jett. Once we agreed on the song, we decided who was going to be the actors and who was going to be the director. Now, we can start more research and ideas on where and how we're going to film this music video.

The conventions for this music video starts off with the genre. Since this is Pop-rock, then the sound can always be heard to have up-beat, high tempo-themed music. This can include drums and electric guitars. The camera angles typically include close ups of artists faces. They can also include long shots of dancing/partying scenes. In the editing process, tints and filters are used to boost colors. Transitions are also included to switch from singer to instrument and back and forward. Sometimes they photo-shop artists to look "perfect".

For Mis-en-scene:

Costumes: The costumes are usually bright-colored with fun designs. A microphone can also be apart of the costume, along with fashion accessories.
Lights: The lights are bright and meant to showcase the actors appearance or the instruments.
Acting: The acting is very light and meant to be fun/ adventurous. The actors can be seen jumping around or dancing.
Makeup: The makeup can usually be very drawn out. The actors/singers can wear a lot of makeup that can bring to light a specific feature on them whether it be the lips or eyes.
Props: Props can include all the instruments used which can be in the background or physically held. Most times the prop is the microphone that's always on them, which can also be apart of costumes.
Setting: The setting typically switches from outside to inside. This can be the beach/park/skate park to the inside of a concert on a stage.

Editing pt.2

Last week we could barely edit but we got more done than others because we had the “working” desktop. Although, we still had to edit. My class was informed that we received laptops but there were limited amount because not all of them were set up. Good thing that we were working in groups. My group and I decided to work on our desktop because we didn’t want to lose any footage. Our desktop quit on us. So my team had no choice but to switch to a laptop. In order to do that we had to save the footage to a flash drive. So we did that. After that we uploaded the footage onto the laptop.

We had the footage on the laptop and my team was all set. We needed our teacher to log into pinnacle studios. So someone had to call her. So she came over and logged in. We still needed to do a few things to add, fix, and render. We had to add music. We had to add text. We had to render a few clips because they were jumpy. So we did exactly that. It went as planned.

After adding the music and everything we showed our teacher. She said it was good but there were things that we had to fix. She gave us tips on what to do to make it better. She told us that we had to change the font color. She also said to cut out a part that looked a little awkward. So we did that. I was  a little bit worried that cutting that part would mess up our time for the project. Thankfully it didn’t. After fix those little things we were done with our commercial. There were a few bumps in the road but we ended up with 25s of the commercial and it was a success.

Editing

The editing process was hectic. The computers were slow and it made it hard to dump. It took forever to dump. On top of that very few of the computers worked so like two groups used one computer at a time. It was so chaotic. My team and I began to edit. That day we were more concerned about the timing. The commercial has to be 25-30 seconds. My team and I had to slow down, speed up, and extend clips. Today we even had to film more to get the right duration.

The computers are from 2008 and they are so slow. Pinnacle studios was not working. It was a little frustrating. We were then informed that we had to find a way to save our footage. My class and I were given the option to either save the footage to google drive or save it to a USB. The computers are so time consuming. We have to edit and blog all in one class. It’s very hard to do with computers that take years to load. But I guess we have to make eye with what we have

I helped another student film today. I took many shots of him running. I also took shots of him throwing things. I packed up and headed back to class from the field. I arrived back to class. I had to write my blog. I was unable to use a computer because the working one’s were occupied. So I started typing my blog on my phone. I’m using my phone to write this blog right now. Which brings us to right now, me publishing this blog.

Filming

For the filming portion of the project my group and I went and filmed in the field and on the bleachers. We had to check out our equipment. We got a tripod. With the camera we got and SD card. We gathered our equipment and headed outside. But first I had to go to the gym to see if they had a football, unfortunately they didn’t so i made my way back to the track. My groups project was on Nike so that day i was wearing Nike slides. I watched how my team members shot their takes. I watched them take establishing shots, POV shots, pan shots, tracking shots, over the shoulder shots, and two person shots.

We then got dressed. Our props and costumes included a Nike water bottle, pants, slides, football, and jacket. For the first scene shot my team and I conspired oh how we should shoot this scene. We ran over it a dozen times. We finally got the perfect shot. Then we moved onto the football scene which consisted of three different shots an over the shoulder shot, a POV shot and a two person shot. The shot I was in was a two person shot. Then we moved onto the next scene. The water bottle scene was kind of difficult seeing to as I can’t catch. But we still proceeded.

One of my team members, Steven, and I were showing a Nike bottle, the scene was him tossing the water bottle. I thought it would be difficult. Surprisingly though it actually not hard. I caught the water bottle on the first try. Each scene needed a few takes so it took up almost all of the class period. We were called in with at least 15 minutes of class time left. We had time to get and SD card reader. We then dumped our footage and started putting it on our editing board. We finished dumping. Finally we turned in all equipment and left.

Storyboard, Camera Angles, and Movements Blog

With a Nike commercial, movements are usually fast paced to catch the angles of:

  • Throwing a football
  • Running
In this commercial, the opening scene is a Wide Shot of the track and bleachers with the editing of a title NIKE displayed. Along with this, a soundtrack will be added within the editing process.

Next scene, a Tracking shot of me running up the bleachers as a close-up.

Next, a POV shot of a football being thrown to a person at the end of the track.

Over-the-shoulder shot is next of the person on the other end catching the football.

Next, a Two-shot of the football being thrown to each-other.

Next, a Pan shot will be taken of a water-bottle being thrown to someone sitting down, which will then switch to an extreme close-up of the waterbottle being held and showing the NIKE symbol/emblem.

This will be the end scene.

EDITING BLOG

Hey, it’s me again, today in class we covered the topics of camera usage. We also covered editing and how to use the program. We went over how to use and check out a camera. We learn how to operate the editing software. We learned how to import files from the camera. Also she taught us the importance of doing everything the way she says. She explain the track and what they’re for. We were also taught of the different departments in the editing application. There are keywords that we were taught. For example, dumping and raw footage.

When our teacher taught us about the cameras she told us how they work and how to handle them. Each camera must be checked out formally to keep track of the device. To start and stop rolling you press the silver button with the red line on it on the side of the camera. On the flip side is where the SD card goes, to insert you just push it in and eject it you push on the card again and it pops out. the SD card must be dumbed before every return. If it isn’t dumped you may loose all of your footage. Dumbing is transferring footage from the camera to the desktop into a folder. The camera comes with a tripod. To put the camera on you have to screw the bouncy thing onto the camera and put it back on the tripod. She said if the tripod needs to be moved it must be closed completely before transportation.

Then we went into editing. The program we are using for editing is called Pinnacle Studios. To start you open Pinnacle Studios and click edit screen, file, new movie and it clears everything. Use the footage from the folder you’ve save your footage to import those files. To do so you must click on import the desktop + sign and click your folder and add everything you need to add. While editing there are three tracks AV track 1, 2, and 3. AV track 1 is title, track 2 is film, and 3 is music. If we want to do a voice over we can detach the sound then delete it. we can split and take out pieces of the footage. And lastly before finishing we must render the project. Rendering is making all of the footage flow together smoothly.

Research

My group is doing a NIKE commercial. In these commercials, the audience usually sees people taking part in physical activities (running, sports, etc).

•  They wear costumes such as their tennis shoes, basketball shoes, shorts, tights, sports bras, and loose-fitted shirts.
•  Props include NIKE footballs, water bottles, jump ropes, basketballs, towels and so on.
• Their appearance is usually fit, and sweaty, with added glisten to their skin as their doing their activities.
• The score through the commercials are fast-paced sounds that are meant to make the audience feel motivated and empowered to work out and be active.
1. Conventions and Codes in NIKE commercials include the symbolic swoosh, added with a "JUST DO IT" slogan. This slogan sparks the media to just go for it, accomplish goals and reach new heights.
2. In the commercial the props are ALWAYS angled to show the NIKE symbol to let the audience know it is a NIKE commercial- even without stating the name. The symbol has become universal so they know.
3. The commercial can sometimes include ethos- showing famous athletes, actors and even signers as a way to show that everyone, even the richest, sport NIKE wear.

Introductory

Hi, i’m Nagual, i’m a sophomore in high school at a school in Florida. I’m taking a variety of AICE classes in hopes to get my Cambridge diploma by the time I graduate. I want to take as many college courses so that by the time I get to college I won’t have to take that many. My dream in life is to succeed and provide for my family.

I’ve always have been fascinated with the human body. When I was a little girl I would watch Grey’s Anatomy and I still do I always loved to watch the surgical scenes. I would love to be a surgeon but my hand aren’t that steady and i’m to emotional for that. I want to major in forensic pathology in college to become a medical examiner. In a way determining the cause of death could provide closure for the family’s.

In my free time I like to do a lot of things. I like to talk and hang out with my friends. I like to play video games with my brothers. Some of my hobbies include photography, playing the clarinet, and dancing even though i can’t really dance.
